Immigration examinations are comprehensive health screenings that you must undergo if you are becoming a permanent resident or applying for citizenship in the United States. Only civil surgeons can perform these examinations. As an experienced civil surgeon, Dr. Lopez can perform your exam and help guide you through the next steps.
To ensure your immigration examination is a smooth process, Dr. Lopez recommends bringing a few items to your visit, including:
Dr. Lopez also encourages you to share any mental health care or treatment for learning disabilities you’ve experienced.
While immigration exams are similar to routine physical exams, they have different goals. A standard physical exam aims to identify early signs of disease to protect your health, while an immigration exam checks for communicable diseases and inadmissible health conditions that might threaten the health and safety of individuals in the U.S.
After reviewing your medical history and making any necessary updates, Dr. Lopez performs a thorough physical exam. First, he examines your ears, nose, and throat. Then he listens to your heart and lungs before palpating (touching) your abdomen to check for swelling and appropriate organ placement. Finally, he tests your reflexes.
Before you leave Dr. Lopez’s office, he administers any vaccinations you need and records them in your medical records.
After your immigration exam, Dr. Lopez may order additional testing, such as blood work, urinalysis, or X-ray imaging. He may also request a mental health evaluation to assess your behavior and intelligence.
Once your immigration examination is complete, Dr. Lopez sends your results in a sealed envelope to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and provides you with a copy.
